@abundance This is *extremely* interesting and I'm having a great time so far.
Humanity continues to advance lmfao:
@abundance hi! this is weird and great! but why does my 1608kHz say I can listen to or destroy it, but I see no options to do either thing? Similarly with drinking rain, do I have to unlock something else to do these actions?
@abundance gotcha, thanks! would be great if when you haven't seen a thing that enables an action, it said like "you can eventually.." or "you may be able to..." instead of just "you can", which makes me feel like i just haven't found the button in the UI.
similarly, would be awesome if the UI made it clear (e.g. via progress in the experiment pane?) that generator items don't function when held, that felt bad to discover.
@abundance it seems like there's an issue where items in a pane with many items aren't displayed even when there's room. e.g., i'm wearing a sock, and there are clearly visible slots, but it's not shown
@jseakle it's a css issue with columns - will try to fix it in a future update so everything scrolls down
@abundance hey, i left it running overnight and now i can't save because the savedata exceeds the localstorage quota :/
i'm so close too! 140/146 with three novel experiments in progress! hopefully it will survive being paused in the debugger for a while...
@jseakle oh, i'm so sorry about this! people played it a LOT more intensively than i was expecting and i didn't compress saves at all, had a few people run into this. i've got a solution but it won't be implemented till this afternoon or evening. your last working autosave should still be fine. you could open it in a new tab and download it from the journal to be safe
@abundance unfortunately journal export also fails with the same error, "Failed to execute 'setItem' on 'Storage': Setting the value of 'currentLocation' exceeded the quota." :/
@abundance it does seem to have survived being paused though so hopefully i can just finish the game now without saving :P
@abundance ok so i got 100% items, 417 recipes and triggered the endgame :D
...but now it's doing the endgame thing one item at a time? which would take, literally, years. so i'm running for loops to delete stuff in the console, but this seems like not the intended user experience :P
@abundance finally got everything deleted, but then it crashed on the first line of endScreen() because there's no "introLetters" element. not too bad to work around, but i can't tell what that element was supposed to be..
@jseakle congratulations on the 100%! and thank you for the final bug report... it's supposed to iterate through the items, but very very quickly. testing now, and likely slowdown is simply from people making far more objects than i anticipated, yet again. i'll need to rethink the way this works and probably move to batching.
@jseakle that said, the end state is just triggered by the audio track - after about 5 minutes of reduction and when the track ends, you get a title screen. but if you opened the airlock, that's the game. thank you for playing, and thanks for helping me make it better
@abundance This is *fascinating*
Are recipe times randomized? This mushroom + salt seems to be taking much longer than expected.
(Also, a minor bug: repeating a known recipe seems to forget it in the log, i.e. the ??? in the second log)
@abundance This was after closing + reopening the page, so I wonder if the progress times for recipes-in-progress got reset to zero?
@mjk possible? or possible if you happened to reload right during an autosave that it somehow logged the div but didn't log the recipes and they aren't checking against anything anymore? i will try to replicate it!
@abundance It made it to Metafilter! https://www.metafilter.com/197249/I-dont-understand-whats-going-on-but-this-is-cool-as-hell
@abundance nice. my kid just watched an Octonauts episode about barnacle geese this morning. Synchronicity!!
Have you read 'Schismatrix' by Bruce Sterling? A lovely collection of short stories that fit together. One of the longer ones (or perhaps it's a novella acting as a cellular matrix for the shorter stories woven throughout) that your description reminds me of.
You got me to play an idle clicker, something that on the surface never sounded interesting to me but your description drew me in 👏
I like it.
@abundance Loving this! Sometimes when a new combination becomes available, it tells me it's in progress even though I didn't click on it and it's apparently not in progress. Is this a bug, or am I missing something? For example, this happened when I got my first honey, with honey + dust.
@abundance Recipes in the journal show me what they're going to make and how long it's going to take while they're still in progress for the first time, which I assume isn't intended, since on the main screen it just shows question marks.
@abundance It also seems like there are recipes that I just plain don't have yet, with ingredients I haven't discovered. Also, after coming back from playing last night, there are things that are showing as new combinations that I already did yesterday. (But I'm still loving this so much.)
@abundance am I supposed to be able to "extinguish" rain into rain and sand, and getting infinite sand in the process?
@luvcraft oh, yes, it's not exactly free as it takes several clicks... but originally the extinguish verb was tied to an object so it was gated until later. i should rethink if that belongs so early
@abundance might I introduce you to a tool that might be useful?
