@akkartik even a spool of film containing carefully produced content by a well funded and well respected state broadcaster can end up being dumped in a skip and only the plastic core being recovered (as the cost of dealing with future copyright issues is seen as more than the value of keeping the film).

This happened to many telerecordings of Dr Who; somewhat ironically on the instructions of the same BBC publishing this article...

@akkartik the BBC article also makes absolutely no mention of copyright issues - and its /these/ which are leading to a lot of content disappearing (especially from places like YouTube) - even music from the 1990s and 2000s well into the digital era is being deleted due to arguments over copyright and fair use...
