I really love the simplicity.
The only downside is IMHO that you cannot have links inside text but always need a new line for it. Markdown as opposed to the gemini encoding would be a nice improvement – but I guess the choice was intended ;)
@winduptoy @hanser is also much much easier to write a gemtext parser than a markdown one. “Markdown” is a family of formats that have subtle differences and far more features than you would think. Just give a quick scroll through https://spec.commonmark.org/0.30/
