I liked this quote from the national weather service API:

"All of the information presented via the API is intended to be open data, free to use for any purpose. As a public service of the United States Government, we do not charge any fees for the usage of this service"

I'm happy to introduce our new ultra-low tech CMS for smol, accessible websites. The goal was to make something that could be self-hosted, but friendly enough for people who don't SFTP or use a terminal. 3 PHP files, Apache, and Gemtext. Should work on any dumb old Apache host; a technical person could manage many of these for friends and family with zero maintenance. Happy to answer any questions or take bug reports.

This is the exact language I use:

"You can add a special file named robots.txt to your page. This will inform web-crawlers, for example, search engines, how to treat your page. It will not block them from crawling your page, but well behaved crawlers will respect it. For example, if you don't want your web page archived by Google, Internet Archive, or anyone else, add the following to your robots.txt:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

I find it interesting how, when I describe what robots.txt with User-agent: *; Disallow: / does, most non-technical users on want to set it

I wonder if there's some way to expose a message about a server being down via a DNS txt message. like "this server is hosted in a physical location maintained by 1 person, not the cloud, and may have occasional downtime"

its kind of wild when I see an anarchist group with a website and it's hosted on wix or squarespace

big tech companies are extremely inefficient in terms of institutions that turn human labor into useful tools

I think original and innovative work with a small audience has a much bigger impact than derivative work with a large audience

seeing AI generated images causes in me a strong, physical sense of unease and anxiety

Anyone had a chance to look at the hare programming language? Any thoughts?

class is really weird because there are a lot of ideas in it that really resonate with me and echo ideas from , but it's always in the context of generating revenue for whatever megacorp is your employer, and by extension also to its shareholders.
Like, we had a whole lecture about agile, which basically boiled down to: "workers can get a bit of anarchy, as a treat, and only as long as they help us build our monopoly".
