I’m a front-end developer who has been recently gotten interested for systems programming.
I’m looking forward to being part of a community who are deeply passionate about creating.
Hopefully I’ll be able to inspire others as much as the community inspires me already.
slower computers, please
@thezerobit Computer resources have become ridiculously abundant but it's all wasted at the software level. We don't need better hardware, we need a culture-change (and market change) at the software level.
slower computers, please
I'm a computer guy, but I'm very much over fast computers. Most of your computer's resources are wasted loading ads and trackers on webpages. Video games require more and more power to deliver less interesting experiences. Don't get me started on cryptocurrency. Computers are getting increasingly complex, therefore less reliable, nearly impossible to repair, wasteful, and devastating to the environment. We need #slowcomputers and more #retrocomputing
We know volunteering to help an open source project can feel overwhelming, even when you're interested. Well here's one for those with a web UX and layout skillset:
Owncast is going through a redesign and could use your help with opinions and feedback. We'd like a person or two to act as consultants in our chat to answer questions, you don't need to actively produce or _do_ anything. We need someone to ask: "Should this be blue? Is this ugly?" Could that be you?
I recently wrote a blog post about the tools I use to write code: https://www.colinkiama.com/blog/how-i-code-in-2022/
However, I think that there are so many cool tools we’re missing out on.
What would you recommend/suggest? What tools do you use to make content?
Great blog post from Matt Dalio, Founder & CEO of Endless Network, the parent organization of the Endless OS Foundation.
Go read the whole post, but I’m gonna share some of my favorite tidbits about why we do what we do.

I have started using this metaphor when recommending friends to use it.
The metaphor extends to the available feeds:
'Home': chat w/ my friends circle, including neighbors and visitors you invited in.
'Local': building party, hang w/ neighbors.
'Federated': take a walk down the street, see weird stuff, chat w/ random strangers, but keep your guard up.
Of course, it's not a perfect match, but I think it quickly conveys the social experience and trade-offs between different instances.

@colinkiama the computer was once for a me a machine which aided in the execution of my intentions
now it is a whining, blistering, vampiric monolith that demands my attention, steals my energy for its own, asks "are you sure this isn't what you want?"
If you have a relatively modern apple device with a screen, open this on it to have your mind blown (on macs it only works in safari): https://kidi.ng/wanna-see-a-whiter-white/

There's a reality that we have to make money so that we can exchange that for food, protection from the elements, the computer and internet that allows us to access the Fediverse, etc.
As the (decade?) old internet adage goes "all your faves are problematic".
Pick apart any financially fulfilling job and you'll find out it supports something you find unethical.
It's tough to find where to draw that line and say "well this isn't as bad as (other things) and my belly is full so I'll do this."
Linux From Scratch seems very convenient. Does anyone here have any experience with it? Would you recommend it?
