fedi "regional" timelines idea

i wonder if there's room for one (or more) layers in-between local and federated, where a few like-minded instances could have like a "regional" timeline?

this could help relieve pressure to join specific instances with cool local timelines, while still letting new folks plug into interesting micro communities.

@d6 yes! a neighborhood timeline. i would love to have this :blobsadreach:

@maya @d6 I think it would really make small friends-only instances like yours really come into bloom.

@d6 Relays aren't a third stream, but they fill your federated stream with the local stream of your neighbors. That's the missing piece for me to go self-hosted.

re: fedi "regional" timelines idea

@rossabaker @d6 tweets can optionally contain location metadata per-tweet. without it, it would be a manual process to self-identify the geo location?

re: fedi "regional" timelines idea

@eed3si9n i wasn't imagining doing this geographically.

more like, if types.pl fills up but more people want to join type theory instance, someone can start a new instance called lambdacu.be. if both types.pl and lambdacu.be agree they can create a "region link" so that their posts show up on each other's "regional" timeline.

@rossabaker

@eed3si9n

currently once types.pl fills up there's no easy for someone else to get to follow/engage with the entire types.pl community.

with this regional model the lambdacu.be folks would (although they would still not see local-only posts).

@d6 My hacky way to do this for myself is to add a bunch of servers, on which I have no account, to my iOS client

@MattHodges @d6

+1 to this. Same. Lots to be desired on the IX front though!

There’s a pretty decent need for one-off, personalized relays to simulate algorithmic feeds on here. Would make it myself but…

@d6 I can't remember who it was but someone said that this was considered in the Hometown fork, something like neighbors.

fedi "regional" timelines idea

@neauoire @d6 fwiw akkoma, a pleroma fork, does have a "bubble timeline" and it's a very nice experience to have!

fedi "regional" timelines idea

@d6 yes, i'd love to be able to scroll through a neighboring instance's local timeline – whatever was posted as public over there. the federated timeline to me is entirely unusable.

fedi "regional" timelines idea

@d6 I love this idea. I feel an ideal implementation would result in few hard birders, but a bunch of fuzzy-edged, overlapping regions.

fedi "regional" timelines idea

@d6 I would like something like that. I'm usually on my sunbeam city account & feel sad that I miss out on merv local posts.

fedi "regional" timelines idea

@d6@merveilles.town Calckey already has that, it's called the Social timeline.

fedi "regional" timelines idea

@d6@merveilles.town on that note, Calckey also has another timeline called the Recommended timeline, where admins can set instances they like to appear in there.

fedi "regional" timelines idea

@thatonecalculator@stop.voring.me @d6@merveilles.town that one's from non-forked misskey as well, right?

fedi "regional" timelines idea

@duc@nyaaa.jeder.pl @d6@merveilles.town social is on stock misskey, recommended is calckey only. And calckey tweaked social to be ever so slightly less buggy :)

@d6@merveilles.town the ability to form own feed by listing servers, blocklist and other feed-forming rules (like percentages of timeline vs popularity-based posts etc etc) would be the ideal scenario.

People would be able to share their feed settings, including their blacklist. People-based moderation.

But if that's not technically possible, then I'm all in for intermediate aggregation servers that just put the contents of multiple local servers together.

There is a demand for this, definitely.
I would even run one.
