Just joined this community so let me introduce myself.

I am passionate about 8-16 bits era stuffs. I like to give a second live to old stuffs by repairing /modding...from Gameboy to CRT. I am strong believer that instead of producing new stuffs and creating more waste on our planet, old electronics can bring value and have second life. I like Viznut's vision of permacomputing.

Also interested into open source in general. Currently learning the basics of 6502 assembly....

We're happy to announce that we just started to work on three new interdependent online resources: the Damaged Earth Catalog, the Permacomputing wiki, and the permacomputing workshop series!

///

Damaged Earth Catalog

A growing online catalog of the different terms in circulation, used by communities of practice, in relation to computing and network infrastructure informed by ecological ethics, degrowth, resilience, repair, and minimalism. Currently developed by @l03s as part of her PhD research.

///

Permacomputing wiki

A new wiki about permacomputing that aims to expose its principles, present and discuss the concepts and jargon required to engage with permacomputing, and maintain a repository of related projects. Currently facilitated by @viznut and @320x200 open for contributors!

///

Permacomputing in the Arts

A workshop series that will be developed throughout end-2022 and 2023 as an onboarding course for permacomputing practices in art an design. The workshops will be made available as an Open Educational Resource. Developed by @320x200 as part of a postdoc research on the topic.

Modding Fridays is an online community of people interested to learn together about the maintenance, repurposing, and reappropriation of supposedly obsolete consumer electronics, for fun and profit. We see our interest as part of a broader conversation on post-digital culture, and repair culture.

Experimenting with my CRT rejuvenator. Just need to figure out how to use it properly.

Current reading. This is quite a good book about the father of video art, Nam June Paik. It covers quite extensively his work.

Reading, listening and demodulating a unusal publication called "LOW-TECH CHRONICLES" by Mark van den Heuvel! In the first part van den Heuvel "discusses the topic of the (disappearing) sound of computer activity". In the second part 18 contributers shared different memories, sound and images on that topic. The images are stored with SSTV(Slow-scan television) on the tape!

At the tape position A-08 you can find an image of the network switches in the Metalab's whateverlab(WEL) plus a sound recording of the buzzing network infrastructure!

After the lockdown you can find the publication in the Metalab library. @metalab

CRT SCR$ Project seems quite interesting, I like the idea of preserving the original CRT look of retro games and softwares. archive.org/details/crt-scr-v-

Only discovered now that BB, the ASCII-art demo from AA group was actually packaged on AUR and other repos. Really cool stuff to watch !

Does anyone has suggestion of tool to build static website? From what I see, Pelican seems to be one option. Are there good alternatives?

Having some fun customizing my desktop with windowmaker and GNUstep

The 2020 #xmas #winterholiday #buying #tech #guide dictionary you did not ask is here!๐ŸŽ„ ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŽ‰

ECO, GREEN: you could recycle the box, the product is 50% theoretically recyclable but it's not worth processing it, so it's just all e-waste really.

FAIR TRADE, THINK OF THE CHILDREN: no idea how it's produced and by who. Our manufacturers have collected all sorts of labels that we can add on our PR.

FREE/OPEN, COMMUNITY, SHARING IS CARING: unpublished fork of Android, or OpenWrt, or was it FreeBSD 4.0? Kind of forgot, it was outsourced anyway.

SMART, AI: it has a quad-core processor to do annoying and useless stuff very fast.

LOCAL FIRST, DESIGNED IN HAPPY DEMOCRACIES: we sent design files and BOM to a factory in China.

MODULAR DESIGN, FUTURE PROOF: you can eventually change the crappy battery with another crappy battery.

CONNECTED, WIFI: it's stuffed with sensor and trackers and calling home 24/7 unencrypted using old software that we won't update. We will hoard the data though and sell it or something.

ONLINE SERVICES: Shitty web browser. There's also an app store with all sort of spyware from our partners.

ENERGY EFFICIENT, RESOURCE FRIENDLY: it used a ton of energy to design, produce, ship, and market, but yeah you can save 50 cents on your energy bill and look like you saved the world.

HO HO HO! ๐ŸŽ…

Finally finished to repair a broken TDS-320 oscilloscope. Now time to test it with a raspberry pi as signal generator

Revel in the marvels of the universe. We are a collective of forward-thinking individuals who strive to better ourselves and our surroundings through constant creation. We express ourselves through music, art, games, and writing. We also put great value in play. A warm welcome to any like-minded people who feel these ideals resonate with them.
