Hey all, it looks like we're appearing on a list of instances to defederate with because a user from here is showing up on the "followers" list of the freespeechextremist instance. I'd like to address this.

That instance was one of the first instances we defederated from after a user from there harassed one of our users here. To be clear, I don't want to associate with that instance of all. That instance very clearly goes against our rules.

@somnius That's galling. No instance could be bad enough to earn a policy that strict..

Essentially, an advocate of that policy must claim that they would never want to be able to speak to anyone on an instance that studied internet culture malfunctions. Even if you don't want merveilles to be that kind of instance... would you agree that a policy of cutting those who read anathema out of the fediverse would be dangerous?

@faun I'm going to make a big difference between "study of internet malfunctions" and "hate-speech and bigotry." The former discusses why they took place and what things mean. The latter takes those hurtful ideas and directs them at people.

The person causing a problem from this instance, reported to me, was hurling unprompted insults and racial slurs at one of our users. On investigation, I found this was a common occurrence from there.

@faun I defederated and began proactively defederating instances like this exactly because I don't want that happening here, again.

I will continue to do so, because I believe that people should be able to work and enjoy things without having to deal with jerks constantly hurling wanton insults. At best, it's annoying or distracting, and at worst, it can really hurt people.

@faun I think you have a far more hopeful way of looking at these places than I do. It seems you still want to engage with people spouting this stuff no matter what.

Honestly, I don't share your optimism. For various reasons, some people will want to be unreasonable, they will want to hurt other people, and nothing you can say will stop them. I've seen this happen far too many times.

@faun In summary: I'll continue to block instances that foster those kinds of hateful environments. The example you gave is far different from our current situation. In addition, I may need to block just because an instance federates with another bad instance if the bad instance is trying to circumvent existing Mastodon protections, like what the Gab developers are trying to do.

@faun It's unfortunate we appeared on the blocklist, yeah, but I guess I also understand where these lists come from.

@somnius It's not just the optimism of believing that people can be changed.. it's also about just wanting to understand the opponent, what's feeding it, how to anticipate it, how to deter it. But I suppose sometimes they're not even worth that.

Gab, though, that one isn't just a source of offensive spam, it represents a cultural process that could conceivably get large enough that having everyone ignore it stops being the right thing to do.

@faun @somnius imo the consensus is : don't do that with a merveilles account.

@faun @somnius merveilles allready has a r e p u t a t i o n and It would be good to drastically steer the instance in the good direction
