My model of Musk insists he can't actually believe it's a good technology (there are so many coins that deserve it more) and he's doing it to endear himself to bitcoin holders, sell like 30,000 cars (including upcoming luxury ones with thrusters on them, and flying ones (yes, battery energy density is reaching the point where they're going to start doing that)), and also massively boost his technical clout.

So, model predicts that we'll see Tesla diversify their crypto holdings to reduce their BTC position at some point. Probably they have a guy on this full time. Probably around the time when common remission apps, BTC's main legitimate users, ubiquitize support for coins with lower fees. He would be exactly the right person with the means (tech clout) and the motive (environmentalism) to mildly but significantly accelerate the transition to more efficient coins.

It bugs the hell out of me to see Ark Invest guy telling the "bitcoin isn't wasteful" story, he clearly sincerely believes it. I dunno. It's really hard to imagine musk being wiley enough to like that thread ironically, maybe my model of him is wrong and he started going senile like 6 years ago. But it seems just as likely I'm underestimating how often he lies.

bitcoin

Yeah he sort of has to stay on Ark Invest's good side. It would occur to him to lie. So idk.

bitcoin

@faun after I realized that Telsa didn't make money from selling cars but from cashing in on green credits from other companies paying for their offset, I found that the bitcoin thing was totally on brand for him.

bitcoin

@neauoire @faun I am just reading about this now and UGH

WHY IS THIS EVEN A THING??

bitcoin

@dualhammers @neauoire What, the green credits? It's fine. It's a good way of punishing car manufacturers that aren't making the switch and rewarding manufacturers that are.

The bitcoin? It happens because a lot of Musk fans believe in bitcoin imo (which happens because the west doesn't yet have a logic for collective construction of humane social myth?). He has the most smooth brained reply demographic I've ever seen in tech twitter.

bitcoin

@faun @neauoire I argue he's exploiting a system to incentivize new needless consumption that allows other needless consumption to exist.

You also don't get credits for doing the best thing - not extracting the earth's resources

bitcoin

@dualhammers @neauoire Afaik the claim that creating EVs causes more environmental harm than it saves is just cynical bs.

bitcoin

@neauoire Do you remember the source? Curious for more details.

Hm Quartz leads me to believe that their materials/labor costs are like 28K per car, that's worse than I thought (they would make 7K per model 3). (Still not sure whether it's worse than other manufacturers, I think I heard it's better)

I should mention, I wouldn't expect them to turn much of a profit for like a decade, they should be putting everything back into building more factories.

bitcoin

@faun @neauoire Nothing in Musk's history up to this point convinces me he will ever do anything rise or rational. It's always been an ego game for him

bitcoin

@dualhammers @neauoire I think he's done many wise and rational things but yeah it's like 40% ego game and that's been tangled up with it at every step.

Afaik he's still talking like neuralink has something to do with AGI alignment. He just wants cyberpunk to be real + credit for new psychiatric treatments lol.

bitcoin

@dualhammers @neauoire *he knows AGI alignment is more important than anything else and he still spends all of his time making rockets aaaaa he's worse than me* hahahah

bitcoin

@dualhammers @neauoire Artificial General Intelligence, the point at which AI is agentic enough to lie/defend itself. The alignment problem is the issue that we don't know how to code "be good, don't trample good things", the only goals we know how to code all run great risks of having terrible side effects for humanity.

bitcoin

@faun @neauoire We don't even know how to code "be good, don't trample good things" into ourselves, as evidenced by us actively killing our species, world-wide oppression, income inequality, death, etc.

bitcoin

@dualhammers Aye. It's going to take a lot of work hahah.

bitcoin

@dualhammers @neauoire You could say that the best AGI alignment is an alternative to solving the human alignment problem. Maybe figuring out what humans care about/should agree to pursue is too hard for humans to solve. Everyone thinks its simple but it's never been simple. People kept "getting it wrong" every time they thought they had the answer. Maybe it wont be solved until we have better tools.
