Guh. I looked up "shibui" in kanji and I don't think this word means what cultives wish it meant any more. (something like "wabi sabi" but less performative and more practical).
My guess is that in japan it might have morphed from meaning a particular aesthetic quality to referring to a particular type of guy who talks about that quality.
I guess there might be a funny thing going on where, to identify something as shibui, you actually do have to become shibui yourself: To have that taste, you stop being involved in things that aren't that, and that causes you to become a certain way, and soon only other shibuis can fully appreciate your brusque, timeless and authentic character.
