And, of course, anyone saying this won't be listened to, because we're just a bunch of FOSS crazies. We're just a bunch of techie wackos who don't know what REAL uses need. Even though we've been over here building free desktops for twenty-five years with basically zero funding.

Just a little reminder that solarpunk still exists, and is still relevant during Covid-19 (:

#ShowerThoughts: If we want things to be in the commons, we have to stop capitalizing them, in both senses of the word. Find other ways of funding their development than venture capital. But also, use email, web, jabber and matrix, not Email, Web, Jabber, and Matrix, so they become accepted as generic names for common things.

Microsoft is so insidious... they're worming their way into every major language community and are doing their absolute best to ingratiate themselves with the FOSS community while they continue to destroy computing for consumers

I had a dream nightmare that we all were using computer hardware that was entirely proprietary and everything was electron. Electron BIOS/EFI, Electron OS, Electron everything.

This is not the kind of electronic future I want.

Surveillance capitalism is the same as climate change, but for data:

- Some people have been warning about its consequences for years
- Most people don't care because they don't feel concerned, they can't see it affecting them
- A few companies are making a lot of damage with the help of governments
- When we will face the consequences it will be too late
- We can still do something about it, and the sooner the better

paid & free OS meta, murder mention

"Capitalism means the freedom to choose! You won't get any choice or individuality unless the profit motive is involved!"

Windows and Mac: Install this upgrade you never asked for that will make your computer unusably slow or we will kill your entire family.
Linux: Hi which of our twelve million distros would you like to use and what would you like to use it on, a supercomputer or your Tamagochi handheld device?

Cops, Genocide

Fired NC police officer on tape:

"We are just going to go out and start slaughtering them f____ n____”...“I can’t wait. God, I can’t wait.”

Civil war to “wipe them off the (expletive) map. That’ll put them back about four or five generations.”

The US is a slave plantation and cops are the lynchers maintaining the master/slave relationship.

Don't get me wrong, computers can absolutely help us regain our environmental efficiency. They just *aren't*.

Not as long as we're:
* constantly syncing everything to the cloud,
* expecting same-hour delivery,
* funding our clickbait via surveillance advertising,
* buying a new phone every year,
* using AIs because they're cool rather than useful,
* running bloated software & webpages,
* buying into "big data"
* etc

Computing is environmentally cheap, but it rapidly adds up!

Chapter 99 in The Tech Industry Is Broken With Problems It Has No Desire To Fix.

Ibram X. Kendi: "The development of racism and the development of capitalism emerged in the same period and they cannot be separated."

"Racism and capitalism are the conjoined twins. They share the same body with different faces and personalities. That's another way to understand how entangled they are."

"Also recognize how entangled sexism is. Sexism predated both racism and capitalism, as did homophobia. And capitalists/racists used and reproduced and racialized gendered bodies for their own gain." /end Q&A

Ibram X. Kendi: "Historians look at the emergence of capitalism between the mid-1400s and the mid-1600s. It's also the period in which you have the development of what we call the trans-atlantic slave trade."

"So when you think about a business, you have to first get some money to start the business. Then if you think about capitalism as a system, you have to accumulate capital."

"The accumulation of capital was directly the result of the enslavement of African peoples."

Ibram X. Kendi: "If you grew up in a society that is constantly raining racist ideas on your head, and you don't have an umbrella, to claim that you have never been wet in your life is preposterous."

We are happy to announce that #NLnet is funding #Lemmy development! At the same time, we are releasing Lemmy v0.7.0 with new image hosting and many more features.

And the worse part is, most of that is intentional. They want software to be bought in a store. They don't want to help potential competitors. They want to break compatibility to lock people in. They want to add value to their own brand.

Which means this stuff is never going to get fixed. It's counterproductive to fix it.
