I wrote an article about the need for low-carbon and #sustainable #computing and the path towards zero-carbon computing.

** The problem:
* By 2040 emissions from computing alone will be close to half the emissions level acceptable to keep global warming below 2°C. This growth in computing emissions is unsustainable: it would make it virtually impossible to meet the emissions warming limit.
* The emissions from production of computing devices far exceed the emissions from operating them, so even if devices are more energy efficient producing more of them will make the emissions problem worse. Therefore we must extend the useful life of our computing devices.
** The solution:
As a society we need to start treating computational resources as finite and precious, to be utilised only when necessary, and as effectively as possible. We need frugal computing: achieving the same results for less energy.
** The vision: please read the article, I'm out of characters.

Time will tell, but I’m hoping for a net reduction of e-waste due to the timing of the Steam Deck and Windows 11 announcements.

My thinking is something like 94% of personal computers run Windows, and Microsoft has effectively told everyone to junk any of those devices that are older than a few years.

If Valve manages to popularize an open OS, and in turn gets more software devs to also support it, my hope is it will increase the chances of an OS switch instead of putting PCs into landfill.

Just finished making this little isometric mini world in . Been wanting to try this for a while. Made up of photos from Unsplash.

Krita is really, really good for photo editing / manipulation. Non destructive adjustments, perspective warping, easy clipping and masking. Sometimes a little laggy, but a legit alternative to Photoshop.

Reason #546 the Gutenberg system in WordPress is frustrating.

It refuses to accept voice dictation input on iPad, at all. FML.

I don’t have the dev skills (yet) to make it, but I would love to have software with a task management / idea capture optimized UI/UX that saves everything as pure text, in either markdown or org markup.

Then, because it’s just pure text, it’s up to you to organise cross device syncing through whatever you want, like Nextcloud or anything you choose.

Atm there are some great task tracking applications, but none that are feature rich and cross platform, where I also have control of my data.

How to add 2 finger tap undo to on

Install Touchegg then use the Touché GUI to set 2 finger tap to fire off CTRL+Z when in Krita.

Then, to avoid accidental canvas rotation when tapping, go into Krita’s settings and under “Canvas Input Settings” > “Zoom and Rotate Canvas” change the left dropdown front “Gesture” to “Key Combination”.

To also add redo, in Touché set three finger tap to CTRL+SHIFT+Z.

Just published Google lawsuit evidence indicates that like always retained users' location data, even if disabled in user interface, to the extent that its own employees flashed LineageOS on their phones to avoid tracking. Full thread on

All of being alive is experiences and stories.

The moments are experienced and then they are gone

The way we bind them together with our sentience is stories

So our experiences are in turn shaped by stories. The stories we tell ourselves, the stories others tell, the way these stories interact all cause experiences to change and shift.

The stories cannot exist without the experience and the experiences we have are chosen, in part, by how stories shape our actions

Ooooh, I've just realised I can make a controller config for vim keybinds. It's been working great to input art app shortcuts.

Esc & i on the dpad up and down. hjkl on the left stick. Probably b and w on the dpad left and right.

Given the choice between these two options, which is better / would you prefer?

Hmmm, I can’t seem to find a way to add a custom language to Serenade. Perhaps it’s there but I don’t see it.

That means it has to be Talon, which is definitely more difficult to use, but difficult is better than not at all.

This morning I was thinking about Serenade and how I’m not entirely comfortable with VSCode being the FOSSiest editor it works with.

Then I found this, a minor mode for Emacs. Very interesting!

Leading towards using Serenade rather than Talon. It’s also open source, seems to understand my accent more readily, seems to run a bit faster, recognise more natural language, and has some pretty mind blowing features for supported languages.

Unfortunately, in the near term I have to write some PHP. I can’t find any voice coding software or shared configs to support PHP. So the thought of having to voice code all my voice coding commands for everything the language needs is intimidating. 🙁

This was awesome. Why open source and control over ones own electronic property matters, and doesn't actually need to impede business profitability.

Straight from the man who *actually* started Apple, is in created something amazing that didn't yet exist, not the guy who marketed it:

Revel in the marvels of the universe. We are a collective of forward-thinking individuals who strive to better ourselves and our surroundings through constant creation. We express ourselves through music, art, games, and writing. We also put great value in play. A warm welcome to any like-minded people who feel these ideals resonate with them.
