His point about singlespeed / fixed being a full body workout is one I did not anticipate when I was still riding a geared bike. I've actually started doing bodyweight exercises specifically to make myself a more powerful and capable climber on the bike. Upper body strength plays a huge role.
@glyph I've been riding a single-speed myself (short commute distances), but it's not "single enough" for me. :D Looking into hubs to make it a fixed gear soon!
