Tonight I ported @neauoire@merveilles.town 's Uxn VM to the MegaGRRL hardware (my ESP32-powered VGM player). Seemed like it would be fun, and it was :)

Here is a little demo...

Had to lower the screen resolution (not enough RAM for full screen framebuffers!), but it has sound, output through the YM2612's DAC register. D-pad emulates a mouse. Also had to do a bodge to the drum-rack example to get it working on the lower resolution.

I wrote an article about the need for low-carbon and #sustainable #computing and the path towards zero-carbon computing.

In short, we need to dramatically limit the growth in emissions from computing, or by 2040 emissions from computing alone will be close to half the emissions level acceptable to keep global warming below 2°C.

And it is possible to do this.

A question for the i3 heads: is it possible to split a single window into two?

As an example: I usually code with two windows side-by-side (vertical split down the middle). In complex code it's helpful to have a lot of vertical space to read many sections in context (without having to scroll up and down). Could I split one vim session / terminal window into two, to effectively double the vertical height of my monitor?

Friday brain...probably not the most articulate post I've ever made.

I learned the double fisherman's loop and used it to create a new washing line with snap hooks on either end.

Tight knots. Taut line. So satisfying.

Experimental Signal Processing With Slime Mould

20-22 August, Berlin

"In this workshop we will be introduced to working with Physarum polycephalum, including life cycle, cultivation, and techniques for integrating with conventional electrical components for building hybrid circuits. [..] By the end of the workshop, we will have built simple synthesizers made up of noise-making oscillators connected to each other by slime mould "wires" grown during class."

First fire of the season 🔥

Can't wait to stock-up on wood and have friends over once this lockdown is over.

Four years writing Rust code and I only just realised the glory of tuples; blinded by structs and enums.

Japanese knotweed root dye!
I'm so happy with how this dye turned out. It's this beautiful orange colour, mainly on the wool.
The outer bark(?) of the root is a dark orange colour and I thought it might dye. and it did!
