trees still know more than humans and computers

KiezPilz, our mycology collective in berlin, has been forced to leave our community lab where we've been cultivating fungi for the past two years after a new landlord purchased the building and is asking for three times the rent.

If you know any spaces in berlin that might have space for our project or want to collaborate, feel free to share this post or send a message 🌱

Happening 26-31 August 2022 in Vester Skerninge, Denmark

Went into Bristol to visit the library this morning. My first library visit in a few years!

Walked away with:

+ Record of a Spaceborn Few - Becky Chambers

+ Curbing Traffic: The Human Case for Fewer Cars in Our Lives - Melissa Bruntlett and Chris Bruntlett

+ I Contain Multitudes: The Microbes Within Us and a Grander View of Life - Ed Yong

+ Understanding Japanese Society - Joy Hendry

Floating solar power could help fight climate change — let’s get it right

"Covering 10% of the world’s hydropower reservoirs with floating solar panels would install nearly 4,000 GW of solar capacity — equivalent to the electricity-generation capacity of all fossil-fuel plants in operation worldwide."

"Trade-offs between the expansion of floatovoltaics and environmental, social and economic goals remain largely unexplored in both concept and practice."

In the second weekend of April, 2022, I embarked on a social media experiment: I blocked my most used social media and news sites while continuing to make use of them in the shape of a dedicated social media computer

As part of the experiment I documented what I did, why I did it, and how it was like. You can read that experience report now:

I've made the switch from riding brakeless with bare compact dropbars to wrapped bullhorn bars with both brakes.

This was my first time installing brakes and wrapping bars. I'm really happy with the setup!

The one thing I didn't consider was the additional reach of bullhorn bars. I'll probably switch to a shorter stem at some point (70 mm should be more comfortable).

Can't wait for some multi-day adventures!

Finished reading The Mushroom at the End of the World this morning. It was everything I had hoped and more. Lots of threads to explore and ideas to sit with. Will have to read it a few more times in years to come.

@loppear @csepp To be honest, I've little interest in optimism or pessimism, both addictions of their own. Hope too, in large doses, can produce toxic levels of procrastination. I tend toward Kate Marvel's (climate scientist) that we need courage, more than hope. The resolve to do well without the assurance of a happy ending.

Had my first bike ride in two weeks today; euphoria.

This is so cool: A global computer network where nodes are available when there is sun 🌥️⛅🌤️

This is definitely something for #p2panda and #ssb and #earthstar and co, as they automatically start syncing up after sun arrives and the computer boots up.

Let's start a solar node alliance!

i've been afk for most of the past week and it has been wonderful. i might stay away from social media for another week or two. it's a good chance to establish some new behavioural patterns.

Replaced the fan + heat sink on my X220 and I'm back in action.

I managed to recall my disk decryption and user passphrases after not having typed them in over a year; a combined 15 words. Muscle memory to the rescue.

slower computers, please

I'm a computer guy, but I'm very much over fast computers. Most of your computer's resources are wasted loading ads and trackers on webpages. Video games require more and more power to deliver less interesting experiences. Don't get me started on cryptocurrency. Computers are getting increasingly complex, therefore less reliable, nearly impossible to repair, wasteful, and devastating to the environment. We need #slowcomputers and more #retrocomputing

Revel in the marvels of the universe. We are a collective of forward-thinking individuals who strive to better ourselves and our surroundings through constant creation. We express ourselves through music, art, games, and writing. We also put great value in play. A warm welcome to any like-minded people who feel these ideals resonate with them.
