Year of Linux on the Desktop, #theVent

I'm having a very stressful time in my work life right now and I've been having a bad experience with Linux getting in my way when trying to get things done, demanding constant attention for very basic system tasks.

Makes me appreciate the small things I used to take for granted in mac OS all the better.

@gueorgui Oof, dang. Sorry to hear things are so stressful atm, I hope there’s an end in sight? Also what has been bugging you about Linux?

Year of Linux on the Desktop, #theVent

@rostiger Thank you!

An accumulation of small things. Mounting a USB drive. Having working videoconferencing. Having working VPN. Laptop reliably sleeping. A hundred other small things... Taken separately, and given the time to tinker, none of them are unsurmountable, but when in a stressful situation they might get really annoying and add to the stress.

@gueorgui @rostiger Linux works if you have time to make things work ahah! Maybe you should change to a friendlier distro with a Preconfigured DE?

@royniang @rostiger I'm very happy with my i3 setup, and I feel very productive using it. The things I complain about used to just work, and are at times randomly breaking after updates...

@gueorgui @rostiger but is it worth it if it gets in your way during these trying times :/

You can run i3 over a DE so you don’t have to worry about things breaking on you!

Bon courage Gueorgui, j’espère que cette période difficile passera vite :)

@royniang @rostiger Merci Roy! J'espère aussi :D

@gueorgui @rostiger I was in a similar situation a year ago, using Antergos (now abandoned) and i3.

Things kept randomly failing, mainly VPN, bluetooth and audio. Eventually I got overwhelmed with the constant need for fixes and switched to Pop OS.

It's built on top of ubuntu so bloat is present, but it runs well on my old thinkpad x220. And everything has been working fine so far.

This is no silver bullet by any means, but it might be worth a try?

@ovelny @rostiger Yes, if I ever give up on NixOS and want to go with something less hardcore, PopOS is on the top of my list of candidates!

@gueorgui @rostiger I can understand that, some distributions work better than others (I had a good experience with Elementary OS) but currently I'm working on Windows because it's more reliable on the work I'm doing :/

@Pulsaare @gueorgui @rostiger yeah I like linux but I'm locked in windows/macosnfor work.

@gueorgui I hear you. I think I've had issues with all of the things you mention at some point and feel really fortunate that I never was under real pressure to figure things out fast.

It seems to be some kind of unwritten law that when things become stressful, random stuff starts breaking.

@gueorgui Plus it adds insult to injury when you're the only one on Linux and want to show how it can keep up with everyone else...

@rostiger you are right about all of that! I feel seen 😌
