New GPU Pricing Speculation, Scummy Business Tactics

I wonder if Nvidia is making their latest GPUs so ridiculously expensive because they simply know people will buy them, or if it's some long-term ploy to get more people hooked into their cloud gaming platform by pricing out the average consumer.

@jbauer Well at least it might not last long if AMD or Intel keep sane prices, potentially getting a lot more customers.

@lanodan @jbauer Not to mention, last I checked, AMD (formerly ATI) GPUs were ranking higher in Notchmarks than NVidia, but I guess we'll see where the 4090s place soon enough?

For reference, Notchmarks (https://www.notch.one/notchmarks/) are a GPU benchmark used by Notch (which is a realtime VFX tool with roots in Fairlight/CNCD demo scene people e.g. https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=77399):

re: New GPU Pricing Speculation, Scummy Business Tactics

@lanodan @jbauer "Nvidia is asking $1,599 for the 4090, $1,199 for the 4080 16gb, and $899 for the very cut down 4080 12gb (which really should be called the 4070)."

Also, didn't the 3090 have 24GB of RAM?

VRAM matters, a LOT. Potentially more than GPU revision.

IIRC, the MXM RTX1080 I had in a 2016 vintage laptop that I sold in 2020 had 8GB of VRAM, and outperforms the 3050 [which only has 4GiB I think? Yet is in more recent laptops].

@lanodan @jbauer sadly a lot of 3D programs require CUDA so a lot of people are stuck with nvidia. Every new release is just a price cut for used gpus which all still work more than good enough for most use cases though

re: New GPU Pricing Speculation, Scummy Business Tactics

@nx @lanodan @jbauer I use OpenCL for my GPU work 😎 , won't touch the proprietary language (a proprietary *programming language*?? What a crock)

Also I've never bought an NVidia card, they just seemed an unpleasant company in general

@jbauer damn i didnt even think about them doing it to push their the cloud gaming! Same thing apple etc have been doing with their abysmal hard drive space prices

@jbauer@merveilles.town Haven't really though cloud gaming would be a potential factor into their ridiculous prices, but it does kinda make sense.

I personally think it's partly to try to clear their giant stockpile of 30-series cards since crypto isn't profitable anymore.
