also online communities thingy:

- coehorts (2016-present but I don't use Discord anymore which is where they mostly hang out. I still drop by for the streams whenever I can though)
- r/fountainpens 2017-2018
- bsd.network 2021-2022
- merveilles 2022

I haven't really been an actual part of communities online until recently. I used to play games like Runescape, Dota, EVE Online and whatnot back in the day but always with a friendgroup and never really part of the larger communities.

Good Night DEC Alpha, you have served us well.

Our last DS10L was pulled from the cabinet to make space for #mastodon and the growing #fediverse

This machine was put into service in 2003 and ran up until 2013 when it was given less public duties. It could famously achieve 1500+ days uptime only being taken down during maintenance cycles. Never had a CPU fan failure!

It ran NetBSD 1.5 up to 6.2.

@netbsd it is an end of an era!

Ah but it started working again literally just now :flan_tongue:

Not sure what the issue was there, given that my cellphone data service was working just fine.

> SATA Version is: SATA 3.0, 6.0 Gb/s (current: 1.5 Gb/s)

:flan_eyes_narrowed:

that explains a lot

Grr, going back and forth on the kind of tone I want to have in my upcoming blog post about a philosophy of software development.

I'm flip-flopping between casual/personal/how I'd talk if I was on a podcast and a more formal tone like I had in my Free Software Bad post

I've been spending too much time on Windows... I just did a `cd` followed by a `dir` 😬

And yes, TIL is pronounced like /'uksɛn/, not as individual letters :flan_tongue:

Finally listened to @neauoire's Handmade Seattle talk in full and it's really good!

I especially loved:

> Most people I know who are programmers use type systems and memory safety and all these sorts of training wheels [...]

My identity is easily 2/3rds or more comprised of almost always wearing a beanie regardless of weather.

Over the last 3 weeks the kids have borrowed and lost every one of my beanies.

…I am shapeless void.

I’m reduced to raw biological function. Am I reached nirvana or reduced to stone?

Is there meaningful difference?

Without a beanie what am I?

does anyone have advice on resources (books, tutorials, etc) for learning basic electronics repair for total beginners?

I have a game boy color with a broken speaker, and an old iPod nano with a cracked screen - I’d really like to be able to fix them some day but have no idea where to start

Nice bike Friday.

That is a bike a customer ordered and it is just so nice I have the urge to share a picture of it.

It is the Achielle brand, family business in Belgium who make their bikes from scratch, so people have their custom built.

@ragekit talking shit/bantering is okay if the ppl in your 'community' know you... otherwise it's easy to misinterpret online and, you cant rly blame others for perceiving it as being mean. Also, sometimes ppl will use that language to *actually* be mean which mucks everything up 😅 .
I'm not a fan of shitposting, just because it is tiring. I'm more okay with it, again, if I know the people doing it well (but that takes time).

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Mastodon, is in fact, Fediverse/Mastodon, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Fediverse plus Mastodon. Mastodon is not a social network unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Fediverse system made useful by GNU Social, ActivityPub and blobcat emoji comprising a full Fediverse as defined by the World Wide Web Consortium.

Many ActivityPub users run a modified version of GNU social every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU social which is widely used today is often called "Mastodon", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically GNU social, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Mastodon, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Mastodon is the instance: the program in the network that disseminates the shitposts to the other instances that federate. The instance is an essential part of a Fediverse, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete Fediverse. Mastodon is normally used in combination with ActivityPub: the whole system is basically ActivityPub with Mastodon added, or Fediverse/Mastodon. All the so-called "Mastodon" instances are really instances of Fediverse/Mastodon.

TIL I only need about 2GB of RAM to do my normal programming/writing work.

Swap does get used a bit, but it's not bad and it seems that Firefox works really well under memory constraints.

I wonder if I could survive on 1GB... :flan_think:

Did some housekeeping on my Documents folder to clear my mind (messy environment = messy brain)

Pretty happy with that. Just over half of it is my Calibre Library and a little less than the other half is server admin stuff (backed up configs, media, emoji, etc).

I love the idea of having no local storage on a computer and just running everything off a USB-connected storage device.

Would be pretty nice to be able to take your entire computing environment anywhere, plug in, and have all your stuff just there
