Octal numbering would probably be less confusing if it used number symbols that weren't already associated with a decimal system.

instead of
1+ 7 = 10

except with altogether new symbols instead of repurposed symbols.


Similarly, we could have written binary using | and 𝇈 instead of 1 and 0.
