According to the library receipt I just found, I apparently checked out a book called "The Rotting Goddess" in early 2004, which definitely sounds like the sort of book I should remember…

Ah, okay. Looks like this was part of my long program of reading about historical witchcraft. It's about the origins of European ideas about witchcraft in the Classical period. Hekate et al. Doesn't seem to have made much of an impression. Hell of a title, though.

It doesn't appear to have been particularly well reviewed — at least, not by scholars in academic presses. The gist appears to be that its author was trying to use more rigorous research to backdate the thesis that enlightenment anti-witch sentiment was really persecution of the remaining practitioners of ancient fertility religion.
