McConnell fought this appointment tooth and nail — not least of all because it gives Democratic appointees a majority in the FTC and frees them up to investigate a lot of the practices that Republicans have been shielding up to now. Just passing the nomination out of committee required a special vote on the Senate floor, and VP Harris had to cast the deciding vote in favor of confirmation.
