It's a good idea to check the Local timeline every once in a while to make sure the rest of the server isn't discussing what to do about you.

What I'd like to see is more of a discussion about how we could (or ought to) use Mastodon in the context of talking about racism, but it seems like all I ever see is the aftermath when those tools get used against the people who experience racism the most.

To be clear, I'm not saying that the discussion isn't happening. I just doesn't seem to be happening in my timeline.

"#Alexa was getting a billion interactions a week, but most of those conversations were trivial commands to play music or ask about the weather." I've created a small, incomplete, list of instances with moderators of color.

The list and suggestions became to much to keep up on my own, so here is a Google document, https://docs.google.com/document/d/12pTmSMpq8lMYyYlHT25DgTmdMmE6ysUyRHGiq-E4XdQ/edit?usp=sharingp

Here's how to move accounts and take your followers with you https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/

@skrishna yes, the tone is a lot more paternalistic here even in random conversations, and especially about the platform itself.

When it comes to Mastodon, I’ve had higher than usual unpleasant experiences of men trying to explain things to me or men asking me leading questions so they can explain things to me (usually that thing involves why Mastodon is better than all the others). Has anyone else has that experience?

When they did an x-ray of Henry Gillard Glindoni's painting of Elizabethan occultist/alchemist John Dee, they discovered that Dee was standing in a circle of human skulls...

Lack of pedestrians and cyclists in a neighborhood usually indicates lack of safety, not lack of need.

The best video store in Atlanta, @Videodrome, has made the jump to Mastodon!

Twitter, nonprofits

The Anti-Defamation League says reinstating Trump's account was "dangerous and inconsistent," and the NAACP says, "any advertiser still funding Twitter should immediately pause all advertising now." Both are reconsidering their charitable partnerships with the company. bbc.com/news/technology-637109

The moderation team is bigger than ever and so is the amount of reports we have to process. We're dealing with unprecedented growth despite having closed registrations on these servers weeks ago. Some false positives are unavoidable, but we understand these mistakes are upsetting and unacceptable, and we are trying to do better. Luckily all moderator actions can be appealed and reversed.

There were two notable moderation incidents on mastodon.social and mastodon.online in the past 24 hours that I would like to address. In the first, a post was wrongfully removed due to a report claiming it contained a dogwhistle, and in the second, a person was wrongfully suspended due to a report claiming it's an impersonator. Both were undone and apologies issued.

Another angle on this that people don't really consider is that, to paraphrase @GreatDismal: going viral is easy on Twitter, it's just not evenly distributed. The Algorithm functioned in part to boost virality, but The Algorithm favored accounts that were already popular. Early on, smaller accounts had a shot at breaking through the threshold, but once The Algorithm took over, virality was largely the domain of Twitter celebs.

If anybody wonders why I deleted my tweets - they drove 178m impressions at Twitter (last 12 months), using their own metrics (analytics.twitter.com), with 48M profile visits. I don't agree with the new vision for Twitter, and don't want them profiting of my tweets.

I wonder how many people are sticking with mastodon.social out the mistaken notion that they'll be cut off from the larger network if they migrate to another server.

If we adopt an arbitrary rule like "servers shouldn't limit or suspend the biggest instances," then we're effectively setting ourselves up for unsolvable moderation problems across the network. When servers can be "too big to block," then fast, ungoverned growth will become a goal unto itself, since that immunizes the server from the only repercussions other, better moderated server have the power to impose.

One of the cool things about the way filtering works in Mastodon 4.0 is that you can group a bunch of words you want to mute under a single category, and it'll use the title you gave that category as a CW for the posts it hides. (Or you can check "Hide completely" and it'll just make them disappear altogether.)

Following hashtags is cool, but the ability to group muted words into custom categories may be my favorite feature in Mastodon 4.0.

Revel in the marvels of the universe. We are a collective of forward-thinking individuals who strive to better ourselves and our surroundings through constant creation. We express ourselves through music, art, games, and writing. We also put great value in play. A warm welcome to any like-minded people who feel these ideals resonate with them.
