i am starting a worker-owned tech cooperative with some awesome friends! i am setting up the social media accounts and i was wondering -- whats a good mastodon instance for the coop? i know this instance is generally for individuals and their personal practice, but i actually dont know the fediverse too well beyond here and friend.camp. any thoughts? does self-hosting an instance make sense?

@nasser congrats on starting a coop; I would love to follow that route some day. I don't have any specific advice but I look forward to hearing more about how it goes!

@technomancy thanks! its v early days but we are hopeful 🤞 we plan to document as much of the process of formation as possible to make it easier for others, like feeltrain.com/ did

@nasser Congratulations and best wishes!

I asked a similar question here some months back about if I suggest to nonprofits that they create Fediverse accounts (Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica...), are some instances more reasonable than others? I didn't get many responses but no one thought it was inappropriate for a nonprofit to create an account on any particular instance.

Some advantages to hosting your own: If you create your own instance it will never be retired until you decide. Your domain name will be visible in the address.

@nasser in my opinion, if you were setting up a Masto account for a for-profit org then it would be in good taste to financially support the instance you're on. At that point, however, it might make more sense to just use masto.host to run an instance for your coop for a few dollars a month.

masto meta question

@nasser self hosting makes sense for a coop imo. then you have admin powers 🤷‍♀️

masto meta question

@garbados @nasser second this! I think self-hosting makes great sense for a co-op; you can have full control of your own accounts and federation. feel free to message me if you'd like some help or recommendations on getting started

masto meta question

@nasser self-hosted seems like the best option.

masto meta question

@nasser self hosting is the way to go.

You should also set up a Hive community for the hub and the members. See https://hive.blog

masto meta question

@nasser there's a coop instance at social.coop but I don't see a mention in /about for organizational accounts, it's all about individual user accounts

I feel like I saw a coop based instance that does support organization accounts mentioned, probably from @GuerillaOntologist or maybe one of the folks on sunbeam.city or kolectiva but I'm not finding it right now.

Fwiw, if you do want your own instance, I would gently guide towards doing a hosted option like masto.host or yunohost, rather than, like, installing mastodon yourself on a linode or whatever folks mean by self-hosting these days.

masto meta question

@nasser oh and also, congrats on starting a worker coop! That's amazing!

masto meta question

@eqe @nasser
I don't know that we have anything against org accounts on social.coop. But I could be wrong about that. @mattcropp @emi @Matt_Noyes probably know for sure.

masto meta question

#socialcoop does currently have several co-op and allied (like @internetowners) organizational accounts.

@nasser congrats! I think social.coop is a good bet.
