Merveilles meta, re: local posting

I've gotten several questions about if we could have local posting here, which led me to do a little bit of research to see what it would be like to add that here.

So far, from what I've seen, it might be more trouble than it's worth, from an instance management perspective. However, I'd love to get a wider amount of input on this! Let me explain a bit more of what I found out in depth:

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

Benefits:

- By using glitch-soc or hometown, we not only get local-only posting, but a bunch of new features as well!

- Easy to migrate to a those forks, just need to do a few git commands and rebuild assets

- Maintainers are actively working on and accept questions on those forks

- Makes our instance feel much more customized to ourselves

Detriments:

- None of the native mobile apps seem to support those features, so you'd have to use the web client to locally post

- Both those forks, currently, have one primary maintainer each. I'm worried about what that implies if something happens to either of them

- Since these are forked from the main Mastodon repo, we would typically have to wait for upstream updates a bit longer (currently, we'd have to roll back a version which could be really messy)

One last negative:

- If something happens and I have to roll back to the upstream branch, that would be amazingly messy. Old posts would be broken, and posts meant to only be shared with certain groups of people would be shared with the fediverse again.

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

So, that's what I have discovered thus far. However, that reflects my perspective only. Since you lovely people are paying me to maintain this place, it's much more responsible to ask all of you how you feel before making a decision!

Knowing the positives and negatives, do you still want local-only posting? If so, how do you want that implemented? Please only vote if you are on Merveilles. I'll make a similar poll for Patreon patrons!

This poll will run for a week to get responses, and I'll boost partway as a reminder. Cheers y'all!

One more day left for this poll here! I’ll be giving a couple extra days for the folks on Patreon (only 4 have voted so far) but please vote here to make sure your voice is heard :3

@somnius thank you for all the work you do making sure we have a little place on the fediverse to call home!

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@somnius Thank you for the thorough status update! :D

I'll read more on the two alternatives and vote on the poll, but this is definitely something that I really appreciate you decided to discuss!

When I joined, I wasn't well-informed on how Mastodon worked, and was under the impression that local posting was the default, so finding there was no such thing was more than a bit confusing.

Thanks again, mate!

@somnius

Which version does friend.camp use?

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@dualhammers friend.camp uses hometown! Darius, the person managing that instance, also maintains hometown as well :3

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@somnius
Where will the ambivalent votes go?

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@dualhammers I'm not sure! Basically, it depends on the percentage of the other votes.

This poll is to gauge how passionate people are feeling about local posting, so if there's a huge percentage of people for including this feature and very little ambivalent or against, for example, I'd be inclined to put in the work to make sure the feature is included.

If many more are ambivalent compared to the other choices, I wouldn't want to make extra work for myself.

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@somnius Right, although ambivalence will be treated as a no in this case, so it only really muddies the waters on voting. Do people who are choosing that option know that they're voting for a no?

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@dualhammers Well, it's not necessarily just a "no"—to add another example, if there are a larger percentage of both ambivalent and pro-local posting people and a very low percentage of outright "no" votes, then I would still put in the work to implement the feature. It's more like, "I'm fine with whatever" rather than just an outright "no" in that case. However, it all depends on what the final output is like!

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@somnius

Makes sense! Thanks for clarifying

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@dualhammers Certainly! Let me know if you have any further questions :D

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@somnius Hm, what does this mean and how do I vote?

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@patrik That post I replied to in a thread has a poll in it. Vote there!

This poll is about including local-only posts on this instance, a new feature we currently don't have. It allows you to only talk to people on the instance and not have that post be federated with other instances.

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@somnius Gotcha! After reading a bit more, it does seems like a nice feature, but the negative points stated is a little worrying to say the least.

Perhaps it will come to the main mastodon repo in the future as well?

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@somnius if this need to happen, might be good to warn people to decide what they want from their local only post (ie: if warned in advance, I could chose to delete manually my local posts before switch)

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@electret @somnius

It's a shame we can't fork some of the mobile apps. It's also a shame this isn't included in the main branch

Gargon is pretty wrong about this

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@dualhammers @somnius mobile apps are not super useful, can use web app 😊

Merveilles meta, re: local posting

@electret
I use the mobile app a lot. Specifically fedilab
