For all those who are interested in a merveilles meetup in eastern canada next year, I've created a poll here:

original thread here:

Heh, this little blurb by LeGuin is both cute and insightful:

Though it references an image not included in that library, I wonder what that image is?

Merveilles instance meta, mini-postmortem

After navigating around, I found this little article that was amazingly helpful:

It even includes some commands you can run in order to see the status of your shards, which is nice!

Okay, update on the issue that just happened: looks like the "shards" that elasticsearch uses got stuck in a "recovered" state and were still trying to recover themselves even after they were removed. I guess whatever issue caused that also caused the logs to greatly inflate in size.

I ran a command to wipe those shards and start fresh, but I'm going to leave full-text search off until the index rebuilds. Thanks all!

We have a winner for the Merveilles Book Club, and it's *The Unreal and the Real by Ursula Le Guin*!

For the first meetup, I propose Jan 3rd (so we can celebrate New Year's together!) at 8AM Central European.

It's not ideal, but it's the only time when it's not deep night for our timezones (CET, PST, JST).

In the future, maybe we can do a round-robin timezone rotation?

Feedback about this?

Also, feel free to DM me if you need help in finding a copy of the book.

Apologies for the restarts everyone, that should be the last one!

Aaand we're back! Reboot complete. Looks like elasticsearch logs have ballooned in size to take up more than 70% of our storage space and search is broken, yikes. Taking a look now.

Hey all, something is up with the instance, I'll be restarting the server in just a moment since it's been a while.

Should just be a minute or so and it'll be back up soon! Financials, October - November 2020

Thanks so much for your support, everyone, and I can't wait to see how well we do in the new year. We've got a bright future ahead of us! ✨

Next month is this instance's two-year anniversary! Amazing that this instance has been around for that long. Cheers, everyone, and I hope you're staying safe and doing well.

I now live in my own place, totally supporting myself, in a polyamorous relationship with a trans partner who I'm engaged to and two boyfriends.

I wonder what me from 10 years ago would think of me now?

Playing with a friend's telescope and got this quite nice photo of the moon just by looking through the eyepiece with my phone's camera!

an important report has just been published by my friend emmi: The Decentralized Web of Hate

"Fascists (and other bad actors) are [...] hosting manifestos resiliently, raising money anonymously, communicating securely to organize attacks, sharing weapons plans, and networking to build out their numbers."

"We cannot abandon p2p technology but we also can't ignore the risks. The only way out is through."

Made a "deli slice & cheese" omelette and salad (with homemade dressing) for breakfast. All vegan! The omelette is using the Just "eggs"! It's a bit expensive but I love the stuff.

Merveilles is a community project aimed at the establishment of new ways of speaking, seeing and organizing information — A culture that seeks augmentation through the arts of engineering and design. A warm welcome to any like-minded people who feel these ideals resonate with them.
