Sorry, I was out for lunch.

Members of this instance, use cw uspol to discuss the current events.

Also, to keep our local feed somewhat useable to others, you don't have to make everything public, use "unlisted" for things that aren't an invitation for a discussion, are sarcasm, or shitposting.

@stephen Thanks a ton for those CSS changes! Those are now merged & deployed.

Put up this pull request on the merveilles-town fork: github.com/merveilles/merveill

This way, I'll be able to keep track of PRs in a much better way, without dealing with all the noise of every single update Dependabot pings us about.

Well then! I was going to post an expense report for the past month but the Simple bank login service is down D:

Regardless, I hope you all have a much better new year than 2020. Very excited to say goodbye to this shitshow of a year.

Nice, we're now officially on Mastodon v.3.3.0! (Though the indicator at the bottom says 3.3.2? weird!)

Anyways, enjoy all! Looks like we have a UI issue that needs adjusting with replies on the web client, but things seem to be running smoothly. Let me know if you see any issues!

Okay, I think I have things all set up for the Mastodon v3.3.0 upgrade, Merveilles! There should be no downtime, but there may be a few hiccups here and there. Our DB is backed up, the changes have been merged, so we should be ready to go in just a moment.

Cheers, y'all! :D

Hoo boy, it looks like the upgrade process to Mastodon v3.3.0 is a bit involved, so I'll have to take this one a bit slowly. There are some exciting features packed in here though! github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/

Merveilles meta, update

Welcome to Mastodon v3.2.2, Merveilles! :D

Our instance just turned 2 years old!

Just as a tiny bit of history. Merveilles comes from a little IRC channel from many years ago to bring together a few people who played a small MMO with that same name.

Eventually we realized that a bunch of us had similar interests and started to build things together like Waiting for Horus, Paradise, etc..

I've got to meet lots of amazing folks working on incredible things through this. And, I love coming here.

Er, to clarify: Merveilles as The Town, on Mastodon, has officially been around for two years. The Merveilles group has been around for much longer, before I knew it existed. So cheers to the lovely folks hopping on IRC that really got this group started 🖤

For all those who are interested in a merveilles meetup in eastern canada next year, I've created a poll here:

Heh, this little blurb by LeGuin is both cute and insightful: theanarchistlibrary.org/librar

Though it references an image not included in that library, I wonder what that image is?

Merveilles instance meta, mini-postmortem

After navigating around, I found this little article that was amazingly helpful: cyberithub.com/how-to-delete-e

It even includes some commands you can run in order to see the status of your shards, which is nice!

Okay, update on the issue that just happened: looks like the "shards" that elasticsearch uses got stuck in a "recovered" state and were still trying to recover themselves even after they were removed. I guess whatever issue caused that also caused the logs to greatly inflate in size.

I ran a command to wipe those shards and start fresh, but I'm going to leave full-text search off until the index rebuilds. Thanks all!

We have a winner for the Merveilles Book Club, and it's *The Unreal and the Real by Ursula Le Guin*!

For the first meetup, I propose Jan 3rd (so we can celebrate New Year's together!) at 8AM Central European.

It's not ideal, but it's the only time when it's not deep night for our timezones (CET, PST, JST).

In the future, maybe we can do a round-robin timezone rotation?

Feedback about this?

Also, feel free to DM me if you need help in finding a copy of the book.

Merveilles

Merveilles is a community project aimed at the establishment of new ways of speaking, seeing and organizing information — A culture that seeks augmentation through the arts of engineering and design. A warm welcome to any like-minded people who feel these ideals resonate with them.
