Hi, I'm Carlos!

In previous chapters of my life I've ridden a bicycle across the states, gotten my skydiving license, performed in Up With People, and grew a startup to acquisition by a public company.

I live in Minneapolis and enjoy audiobooks, cycling, coding, micro-photography, classical guitar, and self-hosting. I'm interested in refining my relationship to tech, and helping others not be abused or taken advantage of by dark patterns and misinformation.

Nice to meet you. =)

During some of my darker hours reddit would be pretty unhealthy. I started massively filtering entire subreddits that impacted my mental health.

The remains are quite peaceful: r/gardening, r/CozyPlaces, r/specializedtools, r/Eyebleach, etc.

Just made the filter list public if anyone thinks it may help them or a friend. It certainly helped me.

I worked on a whimsical part of my digital garden today.

My weekly family video chat devolved into a carnival guessing game asking how long it would take Mom to pee into a 210,000 gallon water bladder.

Ended up making a page in the digital garden dedicated to the question.

Many laughs were had 😂

I've been enjoying working on the personal finance section of my digital garden. I’m planting seeds for younger me, in a garden he might have visited.

Worked on a calculator today that shows what monthly subscriptions would yield if they were invested instead.

v2 of the insect bath. Smaller footprint and 5v USB powered instead of barrel jack. Soldering job won't win any awards but I tried.

Crude v1 remix of a gentle insect bath. This should save me a bunch of time during touch-up. It's impressive how reflective a grain of sand/dirt is. Also ordered an industrial cleaner, stereo microscope, and some gentle forceps.

New shot today. 4x zoom. Really happy with the results. Almost finished with editing.

Took this shot of a burr hook earlier. Felt like a kid today walking around the creek with a magnifying loupe.

The end result is a bit too...1970s Sears catalog for my taste.

100 shots, 3 secs for flash to recharge, 9 micron change between shots. No moving body to lessen vibrations. I think I didn't secure the subject well enough. We shall see.
