Hi Merveilles, thanks for having me, a migrant from cybre.space

I'm Wim, irl a migrant in Glasgow (Scotland).

I like nature photography, reading (mostly scifi and Japanese novels), art, veggie cooking and Japan (日本語).

For my job I do research on compilers, languages and runtimes for heterogeneous systems.

But these days I focus on low-carbon and sustainable computing, what I call "frugal computing".

So many of the "AI-generated art and storytelling will revolutionise culture" takes are from guys who obviously only read non-fiction and only watch the occasional blockbuster movie

Like, all of their ideas are tacky as hell.

Machine-learning assisted tech is going to be huge. It's already a big part of photo processing.

And I have no doubt that it will be used commoditise big swathes of art and media.

But, please don't make the dystopian future you're cheering for sound so goddamn tacky.

"Over the last few months, there’s been an avalanche of studies telling us that Covid poses a major threat to our health, our lives, and our sanity. The biggest risk now comes in the weeks and months after we recover. Our politicians and media have done a poor job communicating this threat. Instead, they’re doing their best to manipulate information to protect their own political interests. The public has bought into these lies. They want to believe they can return to normal.

Today—with many thousands of academic staff around UK—I am on strike as a part of the @ucu #ucuRising action, on the dire state of working conditions across the UK university sector.

While my own position (as a Professor) is relatively secure and well paid, this cannot be said for most colleagues across the University sector—especially casual and junior staff. This is a time for worker solidarity, because we’re all in this together.

I don't post pictures here often (they go on my octodon alt) but I thought merveilles folks might like this one. Taken on the beach at Irvine, Scotland, two days ago.

I'm looking for a programmer who's looking for a short project bounty. Task is building a file format conversion tool for taking a single well known input file and returning a set of files in a known format. C++ sample code that does something very similar is ~500 SLOC. Not sure what's a reasonable bounty, but if you're interested, hit me up.

A mandatory class on the climate and wider ecological crisis for all students at universities is an absolute no-brainer.

While universities lag far behind, direct action can work wonders: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/nov/12/barcelona-students-to-take-mandatory-climate-crisis-module-from-2024

If you are a student or lecturer, get involved! @endfossil

Seriously though, fedi was *built* by furries, trans and queer folk, disabled neurodivergent people.

This is *the reason* the culture here is what it is. Why CWs are a thing. Why image descriptions are a thing. Why privacy matters here. Why moderation tools not only exist, but are usable — and used.

If you had joined and asked yourself "wow, how come this place is so chill and kinda… nice?" — that's thanks to all the nice people from communities some people call "weird".

So #KeepFediWeird.

The city gates are locked tight
And outside there are people
(The mob are at the gate)

My friends are all poor
Think about this poverty for once
(The wolves are at the gate)
This will be your business, too
This land must be shaken awake
(Heretics at the gate)

Revel in the marvels of the universe. We are a collective of forward-thinking individuals who strive to better ourselves and our surroundings through constant creation. We express ourselves through music, art, games, and writing. We also put great value in play. A warm welcome to any like-minded people who feel these ideals resonate with them.
